Panels on "Loss and Damage, Gender and Territorial Impacts" at COP27 is coordinated by Iyaleta

Activity with the participation of researchers and activists is part of the program on November 11th of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt

The knowledge, learning, and strategies of local Brazilian communities (urban, rural, and forest) in facing the climate crisis are part of the knowledge transfer and gender experiences of the territories impacted by Loss and Damages in the cities and forests of Brazil are some of the points to be addressed on the afternoon of November 11th in Brazil Climate Action Hub, a civil society space within the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27), in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt). The panels “Gender and Loss and Damage” and  “Loss and Damages and Impacts in the Territories” will bring together women researchers and climate activists to share ideas, research, and perspectives on how climate change impacts and affects the lives of Brazilian women and the populations in the territories.

The activity will be broadcasted online from 2:15 pm to 5:45 pm (Egyptian time) / 9:15 am to 12:45 pm (Brasília time) and has as organizers the Iyaleta Research Association (coordination), Marielle Franco Institute (IMF), Conectas Human Rights, International Institute of Education of Brazil (IEB), A Drop in the Ocean, OXFAM Brazil, National Coordination of Articulation of Quilombos (CONAQ), Health and Joy Project, Voices for Climate Action (VAC), Ocean Films, Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS), Institute of Environment and Water Resources (IEMA), Articulation Struggle Peoples of Ceará, Business Human Rights Resource Center and Pariri Indigenous Organization.

The panels brings dialogues about knowledge, learning, and strategies of local communities (urban, rural, and forest) in facing a climate crisis and intends to contribute to the advancement of negotiations regarding financial compensation mechanisms in the implementation of actions and policies that eliminate inequalities on populations, monitor the adverse effects of climate change, preserve the rivers, oceans and promote the well-living of the affected people, contemplating their ancestral practices and knowledge.

 

Panel “Gender and Loss and Damage”

The organizations exhibiting on this panel are Iyaleta Research Association, CONAQ, Marielle Franco Institute (IMF), Conectas Human Rights, and OXFAM Brazil. The panelists are Julia Neiva of Conectas Human Rights; Edel Moraes of the National Council of Extractivists; Emanuelle Góes of Iyaleta Research Association, and Sandra Pereira Braga of CONAQ. Besides, Iyaleta will launch the call for action “↓1.5°C and Zer0 Inequalities”, an initiative to the Parties and the national and subnational governments responsible for the effectiveness of the Adaptation Fund, the National Adaptation Plans and the approval of Loss and Damage regulation mechanisms, as they signed in the Paris Agreement – United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

 

Panel “Loss and Damages and Impacts in the Territories”

The organizations exhibiting on this panel are IEB, CIR, A Drop in the Ocean, Health and Joy Project, Voices for Climate Action (VAC), Ocean Films, Pariri Indigenous Organization, IEMA, COIAB, CNS, Kanindé Ethno-environmental Defense Association. Panelists are Sara Gaia from IEB, Sineia do Vale from COIAB, and Ricardo Baitelo from the Institute for Energy and Environment – IEMA. 

 

The two panels will be mediated by Andrêa Ferreira, researcher at the Iyaleta Research Association and post-doc Ubuntu Center/Drexel University.
